BEA Arthur's final act before her death was a letter to Aussie chef Curtis Stone, imploring him to stop using foie gras in his recipes, PETA have announced.
HE has risen rapidly to fame in the US, but Curtis Stone's profile has made him a target for animal rights group PETA.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals disclosed yesterday that the final act of Bea Arthur - the television sitcom star who died yesterday - was to implore the Melbourne-born chef to stop promoting foie gras.
The fattened goose liver French delicacy is made by force-feeding birds for 12-18 days before slaughter.
PETA revealed Arthur wrote a letter to Stone that was to be made public today, but was instead released yesterday after she died.
"Dear Curtis, I am writing to express my disappointment at seeing foie gras in some of your most recent recipe collections,'' Arthur wrote in the letter sent to the US-based chef's Los Angeles agent. "I ask that you give the birds a break and stop using foie gras in your recipes, cooking demonstrations and TV shows.
"Since I discovered how ducks and geese raised for foie gras are treated, I haven't stopped squawking about their plight.''
Ashley Fruno, of PETA's Hong Kong office, denied it was exploiting Arthur's death by releasing the letter.
Knowing Bea, and how passionate she was against foie gras, she would be angry with me if I didn't send this out right away,'' Fruno said. "I hope Mr Stone can make one of Bea's last wishes come true. It would be a great way to honour her memory.''
Stone, believed to be in the US, could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
