The Golden Girls has become a staple of queer culture since it debuted in 1985. Now two original Golden Girls writers are working on a gay version of the beloved sitcom.
Stan Zimmerman and James Berg, who also wrote for Roseanne and Gilmore Girls, as well as the film A Very Brady Sequel, have created a pilot for Silver Foxes, which centers on four older gay men.
“Every one of us is getting older,” Zimmerman said in an interview with Party Foul Radio with Pollo & Pearl. “Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender, we create our own families—and that’s what The Golden Girls did. Those women came together and supported each other.”
There’s been no word on casting, but last year, a table reading for the pilot at Zimmerman’s house drew George Takei, Leslie Jordan, Bruce Vilanch, Parks and Rec actor Todd Sherry and Cheri Oteri.
Despite its obvious parallels to The Golden Girls, Zimmerman says Silver Foxes was actually inspired by Gen Silent, a documentary about the struggles facing LGBT seniors, including isolation and having to go back in the closet when moving into assisted living.
Zimmerman and Berg are now pitching Silver Foxes to networks and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. (Their latest series, the Sandra Bernhard comedy Secs & Execs, streams on Tello Films.)
Gay men of a certain age seem to be all the rage these days: West 40s, a comedy series about a group of 40something homosexuals living in Hell’s Kitchen, recently shot its pilot in New York.
