Back in 2008, when the news came across that Estelle Getty died from advanced lewy body dementia, I was at home watching an episode of the Golden Girls, and in fact it came across as breaking news. As I live in Australia, Entertainment Tonight is one media service we get regularly, and that's when it came up and of course the thought is always there for both the people involved in the show and for the people who watched it. My heart broke for her and her family, as well as the girls. They worked together for 7 years (8 if you count Golden Palace), so of course it was emotional for everyone involved.
The episode I was watching at the time was "Sophia's Choice" a bit of a bad omen that day for sure. But the thing was that interviews I have since watched is that death in fact was a release for people suffering from dementia, I have mentioned it before and watching them go downhill is one of the worst thing you can see. Estelle made the Golden Girls with her stories and how she overcame stage fright to film every week. Estelle was one of a kind..
Bea's Death in 2009 on the other hand was a another loss that was so hard to take in, because in 2001 I had watched her perform in her One Woman Show and I even spoke to her, how many fans can say that, that they spoke to a warrior of TV?
Bea gave so much to the industry and she gave so much to everything she was in. She was a warrior, she always looked in good health, but when again ET broke that news I couldn't believe it, she was well known for her roles as Maude Findlay and Dorothy Zbornak, two great characters from a different generation, a generation for change, she brought that with that one controversial topic during season 1 of Maude. Bea was one of a kind, and her voice and commitment to the stage was amazing.
Rue's death was a death no one saw coming and for every reason, she deserved happiness and she deserved a lot more in her life. her Golden Girls run made it great for her as she was committed and she took every role she got and played you could see she was there for her character and her role.
Betty White now she is a warrior of TV. this year she was honoured for the Paley Centre. She has been through a lot throughout the years, she lost her husband a couple of years before the golden girls and she lost her friend MTM this year. Betty puts up a hell of a fight.
For me and for everyone who watched their careers especially Golden Girls as Golden Girls wasn't "Just Another Show" it meant the world to everyone who watched it, and tI Rue, Bea and Estelle could see the legacy they left on the world when they passed away, they would be proud extremely proud of everything they all have done. So please if you get a chance watch all their work on YouTube, compilation videos, articles and images, take that and go with it, life is put into perspective everyday.
