I took a poll on my twitter account and ended with a tie of "How I Remember The Golden Girls" and "Their Legacy", will it be hard to write about both? No way!
The Golden Girls Legacy-
The Legacy to the Golden Girls will last forever if you ask me. If you Google "Most Watched TV show Finales" The Golden Girls finale is up there ranked with 27.2 million American viewers that's almost as many viewers as when "The Simpsons" first premiered back in 1989. And the show went world wide so the viewership for the Golden Girls finale is probably high than that!.
To their legacy... Bea, Estelle, Rue and Betty set a precedent on how a show should end. With a wedding and a final goodbye to her 'sisters' (including her mother Sophia), and leaving not once but twice for a final hug and goodbye. The girls embracing as the shows credits go over them. As sad as it was it was quiet respectful. Unlike some shows these days, that don't know where they are going. As I have read in interviews and the "Intimate Portrait" of the Golden Girls, Bea was done, she had enough, fair enough, but my thoughts were "How do you end this successful show, respectfully? How do you let the show down, with grace" with Dorothy getting married, and Blanche, Sophia letting her "pussycat" go and "be married now" Blanche and Rose staying in Miami. it was heart wrenching, but it was warm and graceful at the same time.
The DVD's came out, I got them (no doubt I wasn't). And the new line merchandise came out over 10 years later. The "funko's", the Golden Girls Forever Book, the interviews, the tragic losses.. The colouring book, and books by Betty and Rue came out as well. Clue, and Monopoly, shirts etc., came out to old and new generations of fans. We've all seen Mike Denison's "Bea A Day" twitter project (love you Mike!) and the compilation videos on YouTube. You cannot escape the Golden Girls. Twitter Pages for quotes and everything, forums (such as this one). Golden Girls Will never die. The Legacy will be here forever. So please watch every golden girls video you find on YouTube, save it, love and re-watch it. There will never be another show like it again
How I Remember The Golden Girls-
Bea-
I have stated I saw her one woman show back in 2001, and I will always remember Bea, her humour, her comedic timing, her genius and her wit. She gave up so much to make other people laugh, it cost her, but her first love was always singing. The one song I listen to every night before going to bed is her version of "Fifty Percent" because of her voice it was so great, so commanding. She was one of a kind.- How do I remember Bea? Her talent and comedic genius.
Rue-
What can I say about Rue? She was a warrior, who married umpteenth times. But she always picked herself up and dusted off the hurt. She gave Golden Girls her all and I have over the past couple of months, watched all her work. From her "Maude" days to her episodes on "Love Boat", Rue was amazing. Rue was a champion..- How do I remember Rue? Her attitude to her work, and who she approached every character she played.
Estelle-
What can I say about Estelle that hasn't been said? She was truly a singer from broadway, who made way in Golden Girls, (I even read somewhere she won a razzie! during a film with Stallone.. Nooo not Estelle!) Estelle gave great effort in Sophia with great stories about Scilly, and the "Picture it" quote from every story she told.- How Do I remember Estelle? Her craft, her attitude and the way she handled her fear of performing.
Betty-
"The Survivor" she's had a wonderful career, but lost so many friends, including Mary Tyler Moore in 2017.. No one can say she is "just another comedian/funny woman" she can do a lot more than that. After all she has been on TV since 1939!, There is no stopping Betty ever. Betty is a strong lady and I hope she can continue acting until she is at least 100 (or maybe 98..). Her Golden Girls work will never be forgotten and neither will Rose. "Back in St Olaf.." -How do I remember Betty? As a hard working lady who is still going strong, she's like a bull at a gate, give her work and she'll do it.
