Hi, its me.. Stan
Stan was Dorothy's ex husband of 38 years, before he cheated on her with an airport stewardess, later finding out over the phone from a divorce lawyer. These quotes sums it up best from the season 1 second episode.
Dorothy: "You walked out on me and you didn't even have the decency to tell me you were leaving. I heard it from some lawyer over the telephone. A stranger, Stanley, a total stranger told me that my marriage was over."
Stan: "Dorothy, look, things happened".
Dorothy: "Things happened, you're damn right, things happened. 38 years happened. 38 years of sharing and... and crying and dreaming and fighting... and loving and... and children and diapers and... and... school plays and little league. And worrying if you'd get through your gallbladder surgery and wondering if I'd get through another Sunday dinner at your mother's house. And the lean years when the business failed. And the good years and the happy Christmases. All those things happened Stanley and because they happened I deserved better than a stinking phone call from my husband's legal representative. You had a choice Stanley and you took the easy way out and it was a rotten thing to do! But now you're here in front of me and you can't run away and I finally get to have what you tried to cheat me out of... I finally get to say "Good-Bye Stanley!"
So, why does this make for an interesting and hostile relationship? I for one have seen my best friend go through a separation and a divorce, he and his ex-wife still get along, after finding out they were better off as friends, they still have a friendship. Now why did this have anything to do with Dorothy and Stan? I believe Stan deep down regrets everything he did to hurt Dorothy.
Stan is portrayed as self-centred, lonely, self important, I think it shows in some episodes. But during the episode "Stan Takes Wife" he truly never stopped caring for Sophia or for Dorothy, even if he is getting re-married, he makes sure that Dorothy isn't alone, and that she gets updates on Sophia's progress.
During the season finale, when he is taking Dorothy to the church, he said that all he wanted was to have an invite, and be invited to the wedding, but he did the next best thing and drove her there. You can see later in the scene he comes into church to see his ex-wife get re-married, he doesn't say a word, and he sits there, knowing that she can be happy now.
Now why do I believe that they were both petty during the series as it progressed?
Many factors, but the most is how Dorothy speaks to Stan and the way Stan treated Dorothy. While both of them can be part of the blame, it should go to 50% of them. As Sophia in the finale believes that she was way to involved in Dorothy and Stan's marriage. I believe Sophia at this point was getting men to see Dorothy, and see if she would settle down. Dorothy settled down again in the finale and married Blanche's uncle Lucas.
The Stan/Dorothy relationship is complicated, very complicated. But I believe that they had good chemistry on screen as Bea Arthur and Herb Edelman worked together previously on an episode of Maude. at least this time it wasn't the 70s and they weren't yelling at each other lol.. But Bea and Herb worked so well during Herb's 26 episode run on the series.
Meaning that if you have a relationship like Dorothy and Stan's you can eventually get along together even if you have had a volatile/hostile relationship in the past. It may be annoying between two, but in my opinion, its a good way to get hostility out of your system.
