On Loss-
The show dealt with loss like any other show. Loss is a hard thing for any show to do. But the Golden Girls did it and they did it the only way they could for a comedy series, they did it with the trademark humour the show it was known for. No matter which episode you watch the most emotional one for myself was "Mrs George Devereaux" because of course with the loss of a loved one it can seem like the end of the world, but they will always be with us no matter what their legacy lives on with us for the rest of us lives. Everyone should know that Comedy Series are known for their emotional moments, heartbreaking and truly wonderful moments.
And then we know the 3 year period of 2008-10 we saw the losses of three of our Golden Girls, with Betty being the only one alive, Betty has been around loss for a long time with the loss of her best friend Mary Tyler Moore and her 3rd husband Allan Ludden a few years before the Golden Girls started, and she even said that "once you had the best, who needs the rest.". Betty has the legacy of the show and many have said she is "not a serious actress" and "Cant be taken seriously.." but in a movie she did in 2010 she gave a wonderful emotional scene saying "My husbands coming home today.." a military husband and she cries which made me cry, but no matter what Betty has had her heart on her sleeve for the many years she has been in TV and film.
Rose: Tell him you love him. Tell you hate him, I don't care! Just see him before he leaves. Do it for yourself. Do it for all of us who wish we had the chance.
Dorothy: Seems like I'm always mad at my brother Phil. I was mad the day my parents brought him back from the hospital. I thought he'd take their love away from me, and instead their love expanded and we felt more like a family. I was mad at him when I was 10 and he was 4, and we moved to a new neighbourhood. I was made because he always made new friends more easily than I did. And I'm mad today, because I never wanted to give the eulogy at my kid brother's funeral. I'm mad because he died, he didn't have the wisdom to know that family members shouldn't allow themselves to grow apart, because when this day comes, they can no longer tell each other how much they care. If he'd had that wisdom, he could've shared it with me and I would've known the hundreds of memories I have of just the two of us, eating ice cream on the stoop of our building, or going through the drawers at Grandma's house, or dressing up like the Bronte sisters. How those memories fill me with joy! Why didn't you have that wisdom, Phil? Why didn't you give us a chance to tell you how much we loved you?
Sophia: I did love him. He was my son, my little boy. But every time I saw him, I always wondered what I did, what I said, when was the day that I did whatever I did to make him the way he was.
Angela: What he was, Sophia, was a good man.
Sophia: My baby is gone.
Angela: Oh, Sophia... [she and Sophia embrace]
On Family-
The show always had that charm on making the show with the 4 girls acting like an unconvential family, they were there for each other and they were there when they needed each other. Why that matters is because sometimes your closest friends are like family and that they are always there for you. During the Rose Heart Attack Episode, is Rose's daughter saying "She needs her family" with Dorothy saying that she is family she replies no and that the girls are her family and that she is enjoying life in Miami and doesn't want to take her away from that. During the finale Rose says she is moving out to be with her daughter, but in the end decides to stay with Blanche and Sophia because they became inseparable.
Blanche: Dorothy, you don't have to say anything.
Rose: What can you say about 7 years of fights and laughter...secrets...cheesecake...
Dorothy: Just that...it's been very...it was been an experience that I'll always keep close to my heart. [sobbing] And that these are memories that...I'll wrap myself in when the world gets cold and I forget that there are people who are warm and loving and...
Blanche: We love you, too. You'll always be a part of us
Dorothy: Your friendship was something I never expected at this point of my life, and I could never asked for a better surprise
Blanche: That's how we feel too.
Dorothy: I have to go.
Rose: Dorothy......is this goodbye?
Dorothy: I love you, always. Oh god I love you!
Dorothy/Stan-
The entire Stan/Dorothy relationship is a difficult relationship to write about because it is a hostile one, with Stan regretting in the finale how he treated Dorothy and that all he wanted was to drive Dorothy to her 2nd wedding. Dorothy and Stan should both be accountable for both their actions, because Dorothy remained petty when talking to Stan sometimes, slamming the door in his face (which in itself has become a meme) making fun of him etc. Stan took it in stride. But in the finale you see Stan's regret in the way things ended and that they should've worked things out.
Stanley: What can I do for you?
Dorothy: The first thing you can do is get rid of that ridiculous toupee. I want to speak to the bald guy that left me! (She rips it off of him)
Stanley: Ow! What's the matter with you?
Dorothy: You walked out on me Stanley Zbornak!
Stanley: Now I know why.
Dorothy: You walked out on me and you didn't even have the decency to tell me you were leaving. I heard it from some lawyer over the telephone. A stranger, Stanley, a total stranger told me that my marriage was over.
Stanley: Dorothy, look, things happened.
Dorothy: Things happened, you're damn right, things happened. 38 years happened. 38 years of sharing and... and crying and dreaming and fighting... and loving and... and children and diapers and... and... school plays and little league. And worrying if you'd get through your gallbladder surgery and wondering if I'd get through another Sunday dinner at your mother's house. And the lean years when the business failed. And the good years and the happy Christmases. All those things happened Stanley and because they happened I deserved better than a stinking phone call from my husband's legal representative. You had a choice Stanley and you took the easy way out and it was a rotten thing to do! But now you're here in front of me and you can't run away and I finally get to have what you tried to cheat me out of... I finally get to say "Good-Bye Stanley!"
Stanley: Look, Dorothy, we...
Dorothy: I said "Good-Bye Stanley."
Humour-
The show was based on humour and we see it during the series. Dorothy and Sophia with the barbs and Rose, Blanche taking them in stride and making . The show dealt with serious issues with the trademark humour, and for a show to run for 7 years and have fresh humour every week for 177 episodes.
Dorothy: She's out of M-O-N-E-Y.
Stan: Well, she's not getting mine!
Dorothy: She's not out of monkey, Stan; she's out of money!
Sophia: Big deal. I took a whole place setting—
Dorothy: NOT NOW, MA!
Blanche: Oh, Sophia. How nice to see you.
Sophia: Who are you?
Blanche: It's me, Blanche.
Sophia: You look like a prostitute.
Breakups-
The show dealt with many breaks in relationships, but did a wonderful in showing how a new relationship can be hard to maintain and easy to assume that its easy to have a relationship. We see it with Rose/Miles relationship until we never really see him after his episode when the CheeseMan is arrested and we never see him again. We see Sophia date many men but not date them long enough. Blanche is just Blanche and she goes out on dates, not to forget her husband but to fill the void of the loss of her husband George.
Dorothy: Honey, are you alright?
Rose: I'll be fine.
Blanche: Is this about Arnie?
Dorothy: No, Blanche. She's upset because they keep changing the taste of Coke.
Rose: 'What kind of a friend would you be if you let Elliot ruin her life? She could marry that man. They could have a child! [Blanche looks at her strangely] ...They could adopt a child! And then one night at the country club, possibly during little Mei Ling’s coming out party... [pauses as Blanche looks exasperated] ...Dorothy’s having the time of her life when she goes to the powder room and she overhears the towel lady telling Mrs. Steinbeck that Dorothy’s husband, Dr. Elliot Clayton, has bonged every female member of the country club. Can you let that happen to Dorothy? Can you let that happen to little Mei Ling? Hasn’t she suffered enough?
Blanche: Not as much as I have listening to that story.
Rose: Forget the story. You have to tell Dorothy, she's your friend!
Blanche: You're right. She is my best friend.
Rose: I thought I was your best friend!
Blanche: You were until you told me that story.
Why it matters-
The show matters for so many reasons. The show matters because it was a show in 1985 that broke taboos, that made sure you had your emotions in check, and brought in celebrities for some episodes (including Debbie Reynolds, Burt Reynolds, Dick van Dyke, Leslie Neilson etc.). The show dealt with menopause, illness, emotional abuse, love, loss, tragedy and funerals and for a show in the 1980s not many other shows did what the Golden Girls did. The moment the show aired it was award-winning 63 nominations 11 wins and 4 Emmy Awards for all the girls, the emmy win for all them history in itself (All in the Family and Will and Grace the only other show to get awards for all main actresses/actors).
Why does this matter? The moment the show aired its pilot the legacy of the Golden Girls started. Bea Arthur's comedic legacy began in 1972 with #Maude, and she continued that throughout the Golden Girls run. Estelle Getty came off "Torch song Trilogy." and the producers fell in love, and she wasn't supposed to be a full time member of the girls (according to IMDb test audiences loved her so much that they had to write out the gay housekeeper Coco.) Getty was afraid every day she filmed the show because she wasn't a TV name until her debut on Golden Girls, and that she would be seen as a "fraud" because the others were TV legends. Rue had her own legacy at marrying umpteenth times and being the saucy Blanche, most people thought that's where she got her start, but no it wasn't, Rue was on Maude for its run and worked with Bea and Betty before the Golden Girls. Betty was around for many years and joined the cast of Mama's Family and before that was on the Mary Tyler Moore show.
After the show debuted and ended the show's legacy has stayed with the show til this very day. Reruns, merch and twitter accounts (as I have stated MANY times the accounts tweeting out quotes, and art, podcasts etc), the legacy of the show is much better than many other shows, and with Betty White making the girls proud in 2018, I bet you they are watching over her, proud at how she is carrying on at the age of 96. The reason why it matters is because the show is a great show and it makes me proud at what people have done with the show and how far they have taken the show into the 21st century.
