Sometimes even the best TV show on the planet can get on your nerves a little bit. The Golden Girls was the same thing like many other shows. They may have broke taboos but somethings on the show the writers should've calmed down on.
The Dorothy/Stan dynamic-. Look their relationship was ok. But it always got on my nerves as Dorothy would make fun of Stan, but Stan would only say good things about Dorothy.
(This part here is taken from my post Dorothy/Stan Relationship)
Stan is portrayed as self-centred, lonely, self important, I think it shows in some episodes. But during the episode "Stan Takes Wife" he truly never stopped caring for Sophia or for Dorothy, even if he is getting re-married, he makes sure that Dorothy isn't alone, and that she gets updates on Sophia's progress.
During the season finale, when he is taking Dorothy to the church, he said that all he wanted was to have an invite, and be invited to the wedding, but he did the next best thing and drove her there. You can see later in the scene he comes into church to see his ex-wife get re-married, he doesn't say a word, and he sits there, knowing that she can be happy now.
Now why do I believe that they were both petty during the series as it progressed?
Many factors, but the most is how Dorothy speaks to Stan and the way Stan treated Dorothy. While both of them can be part of the blame, it should go to 50% of them. As Sophia in the finale believes that she was way to involved in Dorothy and Stan's marriage. I believe Sophia at this point was getting men to see Dorothy, and see if she would settle down. Dorothy settled down again in the finale and married Blanche's uncle Lucas.
The Stan/Dorothy relationship is complicated, very complicated. But I believe that they had good chemistry on screen as Bea Arthur and Herb Edelman worked together previously on an episode of Maude. at least this time it wasn't the 70s and they weren't yelling at each other lol.. But Bea and Herb worked so well during Herb's 26 episode run on the series.
Meaning that if you have a relationship like Dorothy and Stan's you can eventually get along together even if you have had a volatile/hostile relationship in the past. It may be annoying between two, but in my opinion, its a good way to get hostility out of your system.
Stanley: Dorothy, look, things happened.
Dorothy: Things happened, you're damn right, things happened. 38 years happened. 38 years of sharing and... and crying and dreaming and fighting... and loving and... and children and diapers and... and... school plays and little league. And worrying if you'd get through your gallbladder surgery and wondering if I'd get through another Sunday dinner at your mother's house. And the lean years when the business failed. And the good years and the happy Christmases. All those things happened Stanley and because they happened I deserved better than a stinking phone call from my husband's legal representative. You had a choice Stanley and you took the easy way out and it was a rotten thing to do! But now you're here in front of me and you can't run away and I finally get to have what you tried to cheat me out of... I finally get to say "Good-Bye Stanley!"
Stanley: Look, Dorothy, we...
Dorothy: I said "Good-Bye Stanley."
The Fat Jokes-
Fat jokes have been around for a long time, but nothing, can compare to how many where said on the show. They make fun of Blanche's daughter for being overweight and Dorothy makes fun of Blanche for being overweight as a kid, the audience laughter is just wrong as well. Want to know why its wrong? It sets a bad precedent to those who have suffered from bullying for being overweight and there is no way that it was needed ever. Just because you are a show with millions of viewers doesn't mean that you need to make jokes about people's weight or their looks for that matter.
Continuity-
The show had some errors in continuity and for that matter it annoyed some people, the age of Dorothy's son jumps up and down in the 2 episodes he was in. Another one is also is how Blanche's husband died, one story is that he was in ICU for days, and another one is that he was killed during a car crash. (Dead mam crunch crunch). And how Rose is allergic to cats and in the flashback episode she isn't.. gurl what? Yeah of course all shows have those errors, but did they have to make it so noticeable?
And there are several other things I could say that pissed me off about the show sometimes, was some of the "special" episodes they did. Sick and Tired was one of them. The show did its best to bring in "those" episodes, of course they were new around that time in the 70s/80s.
