"You were operated on, you're my daughter, where else would I be?"
Now a classic episode from season 1 of #GoldenGirls, I still believe season 1 and season 7 were some of the best for the show, the first year was great and the last year of the show they grow as a family, they grew as actors and they grew as people. I believe this is one of my favourite episodes. I have many favourites but I think this is my all time favourite.
The episode starts off with the girls returning home from dance practise with Dorothy being brought into the house with Blanche and Rose after hurting her foot at dance class. (Rose shows what she was trying to do when she hurt her foot. A Cincinnati Time Step, with Blanche then telling her to knock it off). She claims it to be nothing saying its been an issue coming and going for years and saying she probably 'over did it.' in class. And then proceeds to ask Sophia what she is knitting, Sophia says a bottle cover for the cherry, but not for the cherry in the house, the one she takes to the park. She does it once a month with the "Cloud Society" (The look from Blanche as she repeats it is hilarious..) and as the conversation goes into the kitchen with them getting something to eat, with Dorothy's pain obviously getting worse, and then after some coercing she finally gives in and goes.
As we see after the break Rose and Blanche doing their dance number and saying they hope Dorothy will be ok. After they finish the number, Sophia says "Don't ask me to dance I wont do it.", as she finishes Dorothy comes back into the house on a cane. She explains she needs to "Take it easy" and that its "Nothing", Sophia claims she is lying (in which she really is..), Dorothy finally says that she needs surgery, Rose being Rose says her quip "Surgery for what!?" "For kicks Rose!" Dorothy then explains she has a tumour in her foot known as a Morton's Neuroma. (A Neuroma is caused by pressure or injury to the foot and can feel like a pebble and can lead to pain that may require action such as surgery or injections). Dorothy then refuses to go and have surgery with Blanche saying that her health is the most important thing and that if risking her health was ok, Dorothy says yes until (you know it..) Sophia guilt trips her into going to get it done.
As the scene cuts to them at the hospital, Rose gives a great boost (lol) and she says "I wonder how many people have never left this room." which to me is amusing because you never do know how many die in that one hospital room.. (morbid but who else would've said it..), as they say their goodbyes, another doctor comes in and says he'll be doing the surgery as the other doctor is being subpoenaed in a lawsuit, and saying people "Get ticked off over any little mix up.." "Mix up?" "I didn't say mix up.. no one else heard it.." Dorothy complains and says she'll wait.. oh yeah another 3-5 years sure.. the Doctor then says she'll be fine and that he'll be back in the morning. (and then the priest scene a couple of minutes later, and he amusingly says if she needs last rites that he will be in, in the afternoon.) after he leaves Dorothy decides to leave.. (good going..)
Rose: Blanche, call the police! I just saw a big, ugly man with a limp walk past my bedroom window. He was wearing Dorothy's coat! [she sees Dorothy sitting on the bed] But then again it was dark and I tend to overdramatize.
(I think the above quote explains this bit it explains it alot.) Sophia in the scene calls Dorothy stupid (not just for running away but giving in to fear.) even if she was left at the hospital at a young age. Dorothy refuses to go back until Sophia says that if she doesn't want to get it done she'll do it at the house. Dorothy asks if she is serious and Sophia says she is joking and being stupid just like Dorothy is, Dorothy agrees to go back to the hospital.
Dorothy: (watching her roommate stretch) Why are you doing those exercises?
Bonnie: No reason. I just like to stay healthy.
Dorothy: I hate to break it to you, Bonnie, but you're in a hospital. The exercises aren't working.
As the scene continues Dorothy comes back into the room again complaining about being there and that if all her tests were done (the nurse said yes and she says there is a new roommate and the nurse also tells her to relax and Dorothy retorts that there aren't enough drugs for her to do that...) Dorothy claims she isn't the best patient and Bonnie says that she hopes she isn't bothering her with her exercises, and that Dorothy says that is it part of her therapy, she replies no and that she does it to stay healthy. This leads to Dorothy saying why she isn't scared about having surgery, Bonnie says that she is in for a mastectomy and that she is of course is afraid and that no one is that strong besides those in movies and tv. Which is a good point and that Bonnie is brave in her own way is doing the best job possible. (I love this scene because foot surgery isn't a big deal to me, but the fact someone who has survived cancer is a big deal to me. Bonnie shows the strength of a survivor.)
Dorothy: Ma, what are you doing here?
Sophia: You were operated on. You're my daughter! Where else would I be?
We know how this episode ends with the dance and that this episode is a brilliantly written. And you can see how angry Dorothy is when she sees Rose and Blanche becoming the "Two Merry Widows." her reaction is hilarious.
There is a reason I like this episode is because Bonnie is the incarnation of those who have fought to be healthy, and that Dorothy is really just being petty about her health and that her complaints are just minor. So remember that there is always someone with a bigger health battle.
