Please excuse this, but I reckon it needs to be said. As much as I love the series finale with Dorothy marrying Lucas and finally having her moment of happiness and moving to Atlanta, with the girls living in Miami without her, I believe after reading a few twitter comments and posts, that Home, Again Rose should've been the finale of the series, with the wedding episode being the 2nd last of the series. But please stay with me here as I explain why.
"I think my mother needs to be with her family now.. All of her family.."- Kirstin
Nothing hits you more then watching both parts of this episode for sure (The writing for these two episodes was purely brilliant, pure Golden Girls), and knowing that these episodes show how much family can mean to someone and how much over the course of the show they depended on one another as well, you see it culminate in this episode. Rose stating she's from "farm country" and that seeing a doctor isn't in her best interests even if she is ill, she just puts it behind her.
"How do you tell a slut from a year book", Rose it wasn't a question more of a statement.. and I am sure she did have three great answers (sigh), we'll never know what they are.. What ensues next is them all agreeing to go to the Reunion and that Dorothy hates the idea like usual.. As they arrive they take names from the "No Show" table. Dorothy becomes Cindy Lou-Peeples, Blanche is Susan Armstrong, Sophia is Myron Zucker and Rose gets to be Kim Fung Toi.
As the night continues Rose continues to fall more ill, and Sophia goes off with a student who did Spanish class with Mr Gonzalez (in which she claims he's now dead and the two should do the mamba) , Dorothy is off with Tommy Lunt (No clue to what those two got up to..) and Blanche is trying to get the grasp of Susan Armstrong (Susan had a long history I'll just say that..). A couple of minutes later they get found out that they aren't who they say they are. Sophia says to make a run for it, but the worst happens. Rose grabs her shoulder and says "Dorothy!" before collapsing. Dorothy then says "Look what you've done, you've upset Kim Fung Toi!" Blanche responds and says she isn't kidding, and that Dorothy realising what she said says "someone get help!", the next scene is them at the hospital.
Here's an excerpt on my previous post about the episode:
With the doctor giving them an update saying it was "Mild cardiac episode" and she "should be able to go home" but they are "keeping an eye on her condition." as the doctor leaves Blanche is thankful to the Lord and she promises to give up sex (lol), Rose thanks them for being there and asks them another question, that they "should freeze their heads" because she isn't afraid of dying because "whatever killed me I want to be frozen and bought back in the future" or something like that, they reluctantly agree and then go home (of course without Rose).
"We would bring her home that's what we would do. If She had a stroke we would take care of her, she's family."
As Blanche talks to her daughter she is talking about the bible and the kid replies with "I miss Sexy Grandma".. A few minutes later they return to the hospital, Rose is not in her room, as the doctor comes in Dorothy asks where she is "Are they doing some tests before they let her go.." (obviously not..) and she replies that Rose is being prepped for surgery as she had a cardiac arrest, the girls embrace.
Now, on with the post.
1. We see how Kirstin see's the girls-
Now, it may seem rude how in the episode Kirstin saying that the girls aren't her real family as they are "just" people that Rose lives with. But over the course of the 2nd part of this episode we see the girls tell stories about her and how they love her as well (And in a way the girls are also being selfish in saying that Rose deserves to live with them..).We finally see Kirstin agree on why Rose loves the girls, because she is having fun and not being stuck at home, and that the hijinks between the girls is what keeps them together. Kirstin stands up to go and see the doctor because she now knows they should be with her because they ARE her family.
2. Never Ignore Your Health-
These two episodes are important very important. Because you only get one heart, because heart disease is one of the world's leading cause of death. Please remember the symptoms of a heart attack (in some cases you may not have the traditional symptoms, but be on the look out..) like numbness in the arm, nausea, heart burn, cold/warm sweats etc.
Because you always want to look after your health, you may "know your own body" but when something isn't right you should always go and get it checked. Sometimes it may be nothing but if its nothing that clears your mind. Please never ignore your health because you are important, every bit of you is important, from your head to your toes. Please look after yourself.
Rose stating she's from "farm country" and that seeing a doctor isn't in her best interests. (And that even back then that many people take their health for granted and until they have a health issue they finally see what goes around definitely effects them in the future)
even if you are from farm country, never be afraid to get your health checked out.
3. I'm Sorry I Died-
As Rose's surgery is complete and they are allowed to see Rose (Unorthodox according to the doctor) when they enter the room she is in they see Rose lying there in the hospital bed Blanche is wondering "Where is she.. where is Rose now.."
We see Rose's dream and that its the future and they're headless (because of course..). We know how Rose dies "In the hospital" and that Dorothy died after falling into a monkey pit at the zoo, and Blanche drowns in the bathtub, Sophia comes in with a new body, and as they continue they say they hate being just a head.. (I mean you agreed to just be a head sooooo that's on you Dorothy and Blanche...)
Rose apologises and keeps saying "sorry" until she comes out of her dream and wakes up to say "I'm sorry I died", the girls happy that she's finally awake they hug her and Rose explains what happened during this dream..
4. Its Not Just Another Episode-
You think if you had just gone into the series blind and watched this episode you would think "Oh this episode looks like they go to hospital often"... which in the series they all end up in the hospital with something wrong with them. But if you see the episode multiple times you'd understand why the girls cared for each other. Dorothy even says to Kirstin that they agreed to take care of each other kind of like an "Extra insurance policy" because they agreed many years before (season 5 I think it was) if something happens to them they would look after the other one, bring them home and take care of them. As Blanche points out to Kirstin "heck that's why houses have mortgages." and she looks at her like "what did you just say?" yeah she said it, houses with mortgages and she just says it without second thought, (That's the Blanche we love.)
5. The Finale? Happiness is great and all but...-
One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest. It all came down to a wedding and an emotional final goodbye. Of course the goodbye had to be the most iconic moment of the series, but Rose having her heart attack is another iconic moment. Dorothy may have her moment and find the person she truly loves and how she can move on from her failed marriage with Stan with marrying Lucas. But the ending on where Rose walks through that door, you also never forget, you never forget the moment she's welcomed home.
Now I cant think of any other reasons on why this episode would've been a great finale episode, because the episode is a true Golden Girls episode on how the girls from season 1 to season 7 remained a close knit group, and how they remained friends during the shows run. 7 years of storylines and with my honesty I am a fan of this episode, no matter how emotional it may be it packs that emotional punch needed and it is an important episode not because it was the 2nd last episode of the series, but because we can see how much the Women who portrayed the girls in the series grew over time and how they had the storylines of health, illness, marriage troubles, death and loss. We shared 7 years of laughter, and cheesecake with the girls and we followed the emotional storylines, the funny storylines, we followed the breakups, the cheesecake scenes, the insults, Blanche's escapades, Rose's stories and Sophia's picture it. Because it was a show that progressed in storylines and made sure that they did many things considered "taboo" that they used signature comedy they were known for.
The Golden Girls will always be special no matter what episode you love and watch.
