Now you're probably seeing this and thinking "What's to talk about. Rose is an idiot..." but there is more to Rose then meets the eye, and I would think its worth discussing. Now bear with me when I say Rose is the Golden Girls meme factory with words that make no sense and her stories about her home of St Olaf and basically pissing everyone off with a sentence. So I will get into it.
Now hear me out, I have a good reason for this post, because Rose is just one of those characters you either feel you are or its someone you know and it really got me thinking, on how brave Rose really was.. Now when some one asks me a question, they ask me "Golden Girls" I often say "Ah, Rose she was funny." but how often do you think "oh she's brave" sometimes you hear "never" other times "shut up Rose".
Leaving Everything Behind-
Now I have discussed this at length before. How Rose was the brave Golden Girl. And Yes I believe that true. Rose discusses many times during the series, how her and Charlie met and their million children. But the way she left home the story behind it was devastating. She explains in "The Heart Attacks" how Charlie died, and that itself is hard to get through. But the one scene will always be the scene in the series where she is talking to thin air on her birthday, she's talking to Charlie's spirit. Saying that she's going to leave St Olaf and start again in Miami, winters are getting harder and the weather is warmer in Miami. Rose makes that decision on her own, knowing that she spent 50 years living in St Olaf and new she had to start again, for herself.
Throughout The Series-
Rose did that throughout the series, in the episode "The Heart Attack" she explains how she lost her husband Charlie while they were making love and that she remembers calling the ambulance and dressing him, but it was too late. She also says in "Mrs George Devereaux" that Blanche should "Do it for those who wish they had the chance" meaning that she was also mourning the loss of her husband for the long run and that she wanted Blanche to keep the door open and say that she basically wanted the chance to say goodbye, whether it be again, or maybe differently.
Rose: "Charlie made me dress him when he had his heart attack, before the paramedics got there."
Dorothy:"What, he wasn't dressed? We were making love. Oh, Rose, honey, you never told me. He died while you were making love?"
Rose: "He didn't die then. He had his heart attack then and he told me to dress him."
Dorothy: "And?"
Rose: "And I dressed him. And then we had a fight. I grabbed a pair of white pants and I was putting them on him, and Charlie said it was after Labor Day and he couldn't wear white."
Dorothy: "In the middle of a heart attack?"
Rose: "Oh, Charlie was very stubborn and very dapper."
Dorothy: "And then what happened?"
Rose: "And he told me he loved me and then it was over. And I put a pair of grey flannel pants on him and a blue shirt, and striped tie. And he was all dressed when the paramedics got there.
"
That always gets me. The way she explains in detail. (Dorothy you just had to ask what happened next..), it is clear that even after his death for years, Rose loved Charlie forever. (I also firmly believe that Betty used the pain of her husbands passing to remember.) But as the characters evolved so did Rose. And Rose was one of those characters who knew what she wanted and knew that living in Miami may land her a new man. It landed her Miles.. (We know how that ended up..) and she loved Miles truly but something in me says that in her mind she would always think about her ex-husband.
More Then Just Ditzy-
Rose's stories may have been funny, but behind the "stupidity" she was a really brave person surviving things other people would have given up on. She had scares throughout the entire run on the show. She had a throat spasm and a few seasons later had a HIV scare, later in the series bypass surgery and survived, she helped run the hotel in Golden Palace, and she went through a lot on the series.
The Advice-
Rose: 'What kind of a friend would you be if you let Elliot ruin her life? She could marry that man. They could have a child! [Blanche looks at her strangely] ...They could adopt a child! And then one night at the country club, possibly during little Mei Ling’s coming out party... [pauses as Blanche looks exasperated] ...Dorothy’s having the time of her life when she goes to the powder room and she overhears the towel lady telling Mrs. Steinbeck that Dorothy’s husband, Dr. Elliot Clayton, has bonged every female member of the country club. Can you let that happen to Dorothy? Can you let that happen to little Mei Ling? Hasn’t she suffered enough?
(I'm sorry this just had to go here.)
Was It An Act?-
We may never know if Rose taking things literally was just her or if it was just an act to annoy the other women. The fact that she said during highschool one of the Nazi leaders was her PE teacher (like what?) and that she knew her. But was it an act? You may never know, we may believe what we want to believe. How she was radioactive one time (Due to what?!), that she missed out on Butter Queen. (oh no..), possibly slept with cows (huh?) and lived in a burning building, and her husband sold her insurance, and welcomed igloo people to St Olaf.
Rose's Heart Attack... A Good Thing?-
"I think my mother needs to be with her family now.. All of her family.."- Kirstin
Nothing hits you more then watching both parts of this episode for sure (The writing for these two episodes was purely brilliant, pure Golden Girls), and knowing that these episodes show how much family can mean to someone and how much over the course of the show they depended on one another as well, you see it culminate in this episode. Rose stating she's from "farm country" and that seeing a doctor isn't in her best interests even if she is ill, she just puts it behind her.
I still believe the heart attack for Rose put everything into perspective. She was apologetic for "dying" but sorry for putting everyone through that. It made us realise in the final season just how important Rose really was.
Just Rose-
I think we all know how it goes. But Rose is still one my favourites. Meme factory, story teller. Rose is one of a kind
