"I was arrested for that in Chattanooga."
Now, if you know the character of Blanche how would you see her as a friend? Would you see her as dramatic, overly-overbearing, moronic, slutty? Maybe very complex? Because throughout the run of the show we see her as all those things. And sometimes its interesting to point out why. Played wonderfully by Rue McClanahan she brought to life a true fan favourite for decades after the show finished.
Her Character-
Often during the run of the show, we see Blanche as a ditz or possibly someone who has a lot of partners. But how its portrayed is that she is almost care-free in a way, but will step up in times of need. She's a Southern Belle with that little bit of the 50s left in her.
The Kindness-
Blanche did a lot during the 7 season run of the show, but what stood out is in some episodes her kindness above all else. Giving up money for surgery to help Lillian with the care situation, and telling everyone everything was going to be ok. She was that complex person who used her kindness in all sorts of ways.
Why George Is Still Her Number #1-
"This time the dream was different... Aw I got to hug him."
Because Blanche never got to say a proper goodbye to her husband, we see in the episode 'Mrs George Devereaux' just how much George meant to Blanche. Even if George is used as cannon fodder for some jokes in the series. And it is valid that you never, ever forget the first person you loved.
(Here is a little bit from one of my previous posts.. Link goldengirlsnfriends.freeforums.net/thread/449/dissecting-golden-girls-george-devereaux)
Because George never stopped loving Blanche even after he "faked his death", the loss always stayed with Blanche, and throughout the series its shown as Blanche wants another "George in her life, and she just goes after mean to fill the void of missing George."
but we know now she never wanted another George, she wanted that George the George she feel in love with.
Rose brings up a good point during the episode (I know right...), that she wishes that she got the chance to say goodbye to Charlie, and that Blanche should just talk to him and listen to him, listen to what he has to say.
As Blanche listens to why George faked his death, he said that he didn't love her, and in the end he wants her to be his wife again, to which Blanche says basically "Before you go can i please get a hug." The two hug and Blanche wakes up.
She wakes up knowing that George is dead, but knowing in her dream she got to hug him and that she no longer feels empty and she is happy knowing that she got to hug him.
The Vibe of Blanche-
The vibe of Blanche is supposed to be someone you can relate to, but a lot of the time, it was the opposite, but no matter what we still loved Blanche and her complaining about her job, boyfriends and what to wear. Because there is no house of friends, without the one who drives you insane with stories you've heard about 10 times. (Yeah Rose you told the same story about St Olaf but did you ever hear about Chattanooga multiple times in an episode?)
So ya'll Blanche can through insults back, give them and storm off when she doesnt like them, but just remember, her love for her family including the girls is huge. Everything about Blanche that we know now, means that she loved George, and cares about her granddaughters and sons and daughters. Complex or just great writing is what made Rue great in the role.
