I know that I always go on about the shows legacy and I will always say the people who made the series were those behind the scenes and on the screen. But I believe it has always been much more than that. Of course there was the award wins and the actors who appeared as guests in the series, and how the show fared all those years on the TV screen for those 7 seasons, but how do you really discuss and breakdown the shows legacy without sounding a bit pompous? I know that I go on about it like a bad smell, but sometimes you really do have to break it down.
Why It Succeeded-
The show had success where the women didn't think it was possible. The show back when it debuted and aired was really aimed at people who were over 50, but according to interviews and demography figures, the show did really well too those aged between 15-30, and had a major following with the gay community, and that has to be the major player in how the show did so well. And the show aired on a Saturday night, back when people decided not to go out on the town, and stay in to watch the show.
The show did well because it always had a topic to talk about, whether the topic talked about moving on, sex, AIDS, relationships etc, the show made an effort to discuss the difficult topics that many shows wouldn't touch, because other shows in the 80s just didn't have the cast or the guts to provide their own intake on a subject matter that meant a lot to them.
6 Seasons In The Top 10-
The series spent 6 out of 7 seasons comfortably sitting in the top 10 of the nielson ratings. The highest rated season was season 3 which ranked 4th. And I think it was all for one main reason, the writing and the series' most billed director Terry Hughes which the women referred to as the '5th Golden Girl'. You just don't spend that many years in the top 10 without a strong force of writers and the directors and the fans who watched the series for every season it aired. And (off topic) All In The Family spent many consecutive seasons ranking first in the ratings, strong viewership and strong writers team.
Season 7 the final season ended the shows run sitting in 30, the first and only season out of the top 10. Why it dropped out of the top 10 is because of a change of time for the show, and the fact Bea Arthur said she was leaving, which normally when someone announces they are leaving, that's when the viewers start to leave. But the finale got over 27.2 million viewers saying goodbye to the group of ladies they watched for 7 years.
How Betty White Is Apart of The Shows Legacy-
As the last remaining Golden Girl, Betty in a way is the legacy of the show. She turned 97 a few days ago and is still going strong. But why is Betty the shows legacy? Betty is known for her humour and great performances as the characters she plays. Rose Nylund is a character of a generation which you won't see on TV again. Now that Betty is the only remaining Golden Girl, it is quite simple she is the remaining part of the shows cast legacy. Betty White is/has been the shows legacy along with everyone who appeared on such an amazing show.
In 2019-
4 ladies Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty and Betty White, apart of a major legacy the show left. The legacy includes in 2019, a massive new fan following, and a lot of new merchandise. It says a lot now that all this fan gear is coming out now and why it didn't come out when the show was running, but I guess now more than ever we see how far reaching the show became.
In 2019 and many years prior it is great too see that the show is doing massively well in re-runs on Hulu and streaming sites, how many shows from the 80s do you see have a huge following on twitter when they post those humourous 30 second golden girls clips or quotes from the show, and I believe the show now more than ever sits atop a throne of major wins with people finding the show now..
