We're definitely in a new generation (or maybe two) of Golden Girls fans. While some of the comedy is timeless, some references do relate to certain figures and personalities of the day. Danny Thomas? PLO? Arafat? Fess Parker? They, and others, are explained in this great article!

This one still makes me laugh out loud: Rose: "You know, back in Minnesota, I was known as the Sherlock Holmes of St. Olaf.” Dorothy: “Figured out which one was Shinola, did you, Rose?” Rose: “The hard way.”

Mine..
Rose: 'What kind of a friend would you be if you let Elliot ruin her life? She could marry that man. They could have a child! [Blanche looks at her strangely] ...They could adopt a child! And then one night at the country club, possibly during little Mei Ling’s coming out party... [pauses as Blanche looks exasperated] ...Dorothy’s having the time of her life when she goes to the powder room and she overhears the towel lady telling Mrs. Steinbeck that Dorothy’s husband, Dr. Elliot Clayton, has bonged every female member of the country club. Can you let that happen to Dorothy? Can you let that happen to little Mei Ling? Hasn’t she suffered enough? Blanche: Not as much as I have listening to that story. Rose: Forget the story. You have to tell Dorothy, she's your friend! Blanche: You're right. She is my best friend. Rose: I thought I was your best friend! Blanche: You were until you told me that story.

I'm from the younger generation of fans and I have noticed that there's a lot of references in this show that you would probably have to be from 80's or older decades to understand. The show is still great though because it's very timeless and a lot of it is still very relevant to what goes on in the world today. Even with the absence of internet and smartphones lol!

I still have no idea what MCI is? MCI was a long-distance telephone company. During the 80s you had a “local” company, and had to pay extra for long distance calls. MCI, Sprint, AT&T and other companies all offered various rates... but when cell phones came around, many of those companies switched to cellular services... or folded into another company.

Ah yeah right makes sense.
