*Cracks knuckles and sits down to start writing* Ah.. that's better.
They say laughter is the best medicine, and for sure watching Golden Girls while recovering from appendix surgery is one of them, and boy does it feel good to know that I am okay and that I am on the mend.
It's a big deal the appendix the little thing that causes so much trouble. As you go about your day feeling as normal as possible, but then you feel like your dying, all I remember from that day is waking up. and having breakfast and then waking up in the hospital emergency department being told I needed urgent surgery.. I lost half the day, and I wouldn't know why I lost half that day. The doctors didn't know either, one of them asked me "What's the last thing you remember" and I said "checking twitter. I retweeted something about Golden Girls.." the doctor replied with "I loved that show." (rolls eyes, because this doctor looked about 20.) then he said that they did scans and that I needed surgery to remove my appendix.. I almost didn't believe them and I was doped up on pain meds as well (so you don't know what you heard.. lol). I was taken into surgery, had successful surgery and spent 2 days in hospital. I was released from hospital to "heal at home" as now doctors will send you home as it is the best place for someone to be, you seem to heal quicker at home then you do couped up in the hospital.
So what happened after that? I've been relaxing watching Golden Girls, checking out twitter and talking with old friends, (did I say Golden Girls is making me feel better?) you're darn right I did. Why? because I am a firm believer in "Laughter being the best medicine." and I'm not a doctor either, I'm just a person. So that's what this post will be all about, the laughter the show brought us throughout its 7 season run.
The show brought laughter in many a serious subject. It used its comedy to make like of serious subjects, but it made sure that it didn't cross the line. I know many people who said the show helped them fight their depression (hearing the theme song, or watching short clips posted online helped some of them laugh again, helped some people smile and feel like they could belong again.), those who have suffered loss or the death of a loved one, or needed just that half hour with the Golden Girls. The show even brought humour to menopause by saying no matter what age you are you can be who you are without having a label pushed on you.
The show was popular in the 18-35 demographic and for a lot of older viewers it made them feel young again, it made them laugh like they never laughed before. The line that always gets me is "Shady Pines, Ma!" then "Shady Pines, Rose!" with "This shouldn't work on me" as the reply made me laugh, not sure about everyone else. Whether it be Rose's stupidity or Sophia's stories there is always one character that makes you laugh and we all have our own Golden Girl that we love and that we are a little bit like. We all have an episode or line that we love to quote, I've even heard my mother threaten my dad with "I'll send you to Shady Pines" with him saying "That isn't even real.." it mightn't be real but Shady Pines was the reason we stayed to watch. (oops sorry my home burned down.. Shady Pines!), see, see it works for sure. I think my family must think i'm crazy for not watching a show from 2018, but what's to watch when you that Golden Girls is timeless.
We laughed and cried during any episode of Golden Girls, and laughter was the highest point of the show because I don't think I would like to cry at Blanche saying goodbye to her 'Big Daddy' again, or Sophia breaking down at the loss of her son Phil, or the moment Blanche wakes up from her dream about her husband George.. boy did the show have those real sad moments.
The shows biggest laugh came from the "Herring War" story, and how you shouldn't take a herring to a herring circus.. (yeah I think you get it lol.) and how that was the biggest laugh and how Blanche and Dorothy couldn't stop laughing, and how they "broke character" because it was just so funny (although I don't know how true that is. I read a few youtube comments about it, some people say they did break character others say it was just part of the script.. Me? I believe they did break character because it was hilarious).
So, no matter what anyone thinks, I think Golden Girls is the perfect recipe for laughter being the best medicine (choose an episode you know is funny and go for gold!), and I believe it has helped a lot of people and I believe any show can do this if it is perfect comedy.
