"I taught a class today - the finest school in Dade County. Two girls had shaved heads and three boys had green hair."
"They're expressing themselves."
"Well, I expressed myself. I told them they had to leave. They were too ugly to look at. Now the parents are mad. A father came in in a three-piece suit and defended Tiffany, a bald girl with a nose ring.
"
Now that's how you come into the series with a bang! Dorothy making fun of "ugly" students, I mean alright but the script writers knew what they were doing in that pilot episode and as well as that (twitter facts rule by the way!) the pilot episode "The Engagement" beat out popular show The Cosby Show that night for ratings, how good is that, the show beat out Cosby, and I find that good personally.
So what else was around in 1985? Shows like Cheers, The Cosby Show, 227, Dallas, Family Ties, Newhart, Murder,She Wrote , The Jeffersons, Australian TV show Neighbours debuted, and many, many more shows were around, and the funny thing about some of these shows is that they were almost cancelled due to low numbers during the pilot season..
"That we're together. And that no matter what happens, even if we all get married, we'll stick together.
"- Dorothy
That quote there. That quote in the final minute of the Golden Girls pilot was the start of an amazing 7 year run, and I can tell you now, that a pilot episode can and does set up how some series will go down.
Many times have I stated the "7 Seasons, 177 episodes" stuff in my forum posts. Why? Because its true what they say, no matter how long you do a show with your closest friends, you remain friends forever. Some shows may end in a blaze of glory and the actors/actresses never see each other again. The Golden Girls were no different, but the one thing you saw when they were out as a group, is how well they looked together, Bea, Betty, Rue and Estelle. Whether it was claiming awards or just out a party they were together.
And before I start I will say that Season 7 of #GoldenGirls was the best season, not because it was the last season, but because it had brilliant writing and that they knew how an episode would work. Season 1 was a great bunch of writers finding their feet, finding what worked and finding their demographic.
Season 1 of the Golden Girls proved that in the 80s, older ladies could be a ratings hit, of course they were, the first episode proved that, and as we saw throughout the episode them beginning to gel as a cast, the moment Sophia rung that door-bell, to the moment Dorothy says that they'll never be alone, after Blanche's "husband" going on the run. No other show's pilot has made me laugh more then the #GoldenGirls and for me that's what is important, if its a comedy show, throw in some good laughs, not cheap or tacky, good laughs, and nowadays it should be that, but its not and its sad. Golden Girls will always be timeless in this area.
If you were to ask me, which show I watch now that I still find funny, I will say Family Guy, Golden Girls and the hilarious side to Fixer Upper (you know..Chip cause he's a loveable idiot..), and there are many shows (many I cant even name because I forget what they're called half the time) that I do find worth a laugh, but nothing gets me more then watching #GoldenGirls.
When that pilot episode aired for Golden Girls, you just knew it was going to be good and boy where we right..
The show ended with a wedding, and a last hug goodbye, everything felt wrapped up, Dorothy finally getting the happiness of finally settling down. I said before I'd rather this ending then most endings nowadays. 7 years of love, trust, cheesecake, came down to one of the most emotional scenes, Dorothy say her final goodbye. "You'll always be my sisters. Always."
