Now hear me out, I have a good reason for this post.. (Particularly a retweet I saw, thank you random tweeter, for the idea and credit for this post goes to you.) and it really got me thinking, on how brave Rose really was.. Now when some one asks me a question, they ask me "Golden Girls" I often say "Ah, Rose she was funny." but how often do you think "oh she's brave" sometimes you hear "never" other times "shut up Rose", but I'll get down to it as you know, but each of the girls was "brave" in their own way..
Blanche- Blanche was brave because she had to live out the rest of her life without her husband George. (If you watch the episode Mrs George Devereaux, you will understand why. She never stopped loving George and missed him. She dreamed about him and she missed him dearly. If that's not heartbreaking enough I don't know what is..), but she dates other men to try and fill that void. Blanche was known as the "group bitch" because she often put herself before other people, and while that's true she also had a heart of gold she really did. I think what people don't get about Blanche is that she is because trying to fill the void and while some people may think its wrong, Blanche did what she had to, because loving someone even after they have passed away doesn't mean you are weak it means you can mourn as much as you can it wont bring back that loved one.
Sophia- Sophia was brave in her own way as well, she fought to be independent for a long time, and even in the finale refused to go with Dorothy to Atlanta instead spending out the rest of her days in Miami. But what made Sophia brave was the fact that she ran away from a controlling marriage (arranged through the family, it didn't end well..) in Sicily and she gave up everything she had to get on that boat and start a new life in America, and that's where she met Sal her husband, and as we see throughout the series her character grow and her stories get wilder and wilder she is still very emotional about the death of her husband and even flew back to Brooklyn to see "the old house one more time" Sal's ghost stands in the bedroom and Sophia says to him she doesn't want to forget him, but he replies she doesn't need to remember because he will always be in her heart.
Dorothy- Dorothy is brave because after 38 years of marriage Stan (the yutz) left her for a younger woman and she hated him for it and for a fact, that's right two's relationship might be bitter, but what caused Dorothy to be so brave was how she soldiered on, not only for her, but for her grown children as well. Dorothy's character lacks a bit of self-esteem and its a whole heap of reasons why. (The fact she married Stan and had his kids may be one. and the fact that she was emotionally abused when dating a football player, may be another) another may be the fact she thinks of herself as a "failure" and that's definitely not it. (I will bring Maude into this for just one moment...don't mind me..). In Maude we see a confident character and in Golden Girls we see the opposite, but the one line that sways both characters is that their "That's why my Humour Is so Caustic" and by gosh it is. Humour can be used to overcome and humour has done that for a lot of people. Dorothy is brave of course and of course in a golden girl way, she finds love again and she marries Blanche's uncle Lucas in the finale of the series., and she truly finds happiness and that's what a finale should be all about.
Rose- Now here it is the reasons why Rose was the bravest golden girl of them all.. What Rose said throughout the series on her husband, family, town and her health, you wouldn't think she is brave, but hell she really is and she deserves a lot of respect for it (you know a lot of the time you'd just say shut up Rose and wave your hand like you don't care).
Months after the loss of her Husband Charlie from a heart attack (whilst making l-o-v-e), she decides to leave St Olaf for Miami (As the winters were getting rougher in St Olaf and that it was going to be harder to stay without him, she's obviously talking to thin air, but ) and she says this whilst celebrating her birthday. Leaving behind the only home she's ever known, where she lived, raised her kids and married her husband. She makes that tough decision to leave the place she called home for over 50 years, that I consider very brave.
And the thing about that this when you're 50 do you consider a change in your life? Would you be prepared to move to a new city/town/area, make new friends and maybe have a new job? Would you be prepared to give up the only life you ever known to move in with someone you don't know, then become great friends with them? Would you be prepared for new challenges and new choices?
Rose did that throughout the series, in the episode "The Heart Attack" she explains how she lost her husband Charlie while they were making love. She also says in "Mrs George Devereaux" that Blanche should "Do it for those who wish they had the chance" meaning that she was also mourning the loss of her husband for the long run and that she wanted Blanche to keep the door open and say that she basically wanted the chance to say goodbye.
Rose's stories may have been funny, but behind the "stupidity" she was a really brave person surviving things other people would have given up on. She had bypass surgery and survived, she helped run the hotel in Golden Palace, and she went through a lot on the series. Rose may have been ditsy and dumb but she sure was the bravest on the series, she gave up her life in St Olaf to move to Miami and leave everything behind, it means a lot to see Rose get through a lot of stuff in the show and Rose is kind enough to know that she made the right choice.
Rose was the bravest.
