First I will start off and say my thoughts go out to his wife Susan Harris and his family..
This was not the way I would've woken up today, as I never expected to be writing about Paul Junger Witt's death, ever. Reading the news is so heartbreaking as now Paul's legacy in helping produce the juggernaut that became Golden Girls will never be forgotten.
I don't know much about Paul, but I do know he with wife Susan Harris created Witt/Harris/Thomas Productions which produced Golden Girls (ironically it was the last show the company produced..) Golden Girls won many awards during the 7 years it was on TV, the actresses, writers and everyone who is everyone basically won an emmy, it was hard work well rewarded.
I remember watching all 4 of the #GoldenGirls intimate portraits and just seeing his insight into the show and the fact he did hold a regret to going into Golden Girls spin-off Golden Palace right after ending the show, that he was proud of his golden girls, and his other shows.
Tony's hard work will never be forgotten about and his legacy will live on in the many shows he helped create and turn into the juggernauts they are today.
Golden Girls-
The show matters for so many reasons. The show matters because it was a show in 1985 that broke taboos, that made sure you had your emotions in check, and brought in celebrities for some episodes (including Debbie Reynolds, Burt Reynolds, Dick van Dyke, Leslie Neilson etc.). The show dealt with menopause, illness, emotional abuse, love, loss, tragedy and funerals and for a show in the 1980s not many other shows did what the Golden Girls did. The moment the show aired it was award-winning 63 nominations 11 wins and 4 Emmy Awards for all the girls, and many more for the crew including Thomas, Witt and Harris for their hard work on the show.
Empty Nest-
Another show that raised the bar, it was produced again by Witt and Harris, and the show went on for ironically 7 years as well. the show is set in Miami the day to day misadventures of a widowed pediatrician, Harry Weston, and his two adult daughters, Barbara and Carol Weston, who have come back to live with him after failed marriages and their life as they try to "leave the nest" on more then one occasion.
Benson-
Produced by the team that bought you "Soap",and later on "The Golden Girls", "It's A Living",and "Empty Nest"(under the supervision of executive producers Susan Harris, Paul Junger-Witt,and Tony Thomas),the sitcom "Benson" became one of the biggest hits to come out of the late-1970's and continue its streak into the mid-1980's. This series was basically a spin-off from the soap opera parody "Soap"(the title character, portrayed by Robert Guillaume, had originally first appeared on the earlier series as the wise-cracking yet level-headed African American butler for the highly dysfunctional Tate family.
And the Rest-
Many other shows were made and produced by Witt and Harris and Thomas, so don't forget those if you plan on binging any of those series.
The Award Wins-
I can never not mention how many awards that Golden Girls had won. It won a lot, it had critical acclaim and was nominated for awards in all 7 seasons, but the girls won their awards in 1986 (Betty), 1987 (Rue) and 1988 (Bea and Estelle). It was a reward for the hard work they did, a true reward, because the writers including creators Susan Harris, Junger and Thomas also got an Emmy award as well for all their hard work for the series and for many of their other shows as well, cannot just mention Golden Girls.
Paul did everything, produced many hit shows with Susan and Tony, won many awards and he didn't stop going, he made the train go from station to station and keep going..
Rest in Peace Paul, you've earned it.
