The Herring Story and how big the audience laughter was, and you could see Bea and Rue just losing it and laughing so hard (laughed so hard they broke character according to on set sources, they almost cut the scene but they kept it and made it the best moments in the series). So the story (one of many from Rose) is the reason why people loved Rose's stories and why she is some peoples favourite character. Everyone has their favourite Golden Girl and even today the show is making people laugh, helping some people through tough times and even making them feel better.
"Grandma doesn't just fade from existence when she passes a certain age. She's still living and having fun!"- Betty White on the Golden Girls in her Intimate Portrait.
Sophia: Who are you?
Blanche: It's me, Blanche.
Sophia: You look like a prostitute.
Laughter Through Loss-
During its 7 year run, the show dealt with loss in the way only the Golden Girls could, with humour and love, even though it was a comedy series, there is no doubt that a comedy series can gut punch you, and hard and the fact that it did this showed how much a show can do with a great writers (The show dealt with Sophia trying to remember her husband Sal and how she went back to Brooklyn just to remember him, Rue never getting over the loss of her husband George, Rose never forgetting about Charlie and Dorothy trying to move on from Stanley). but knowing that you are doing a storyline where someone dies is never easy and it means you have to try and make it as respectful as possible. But even in those episodes there has to be some humour, and of course Golden Girls did this.
Reasoning Behind Sophia's Lines-
The writers of the show always tried to give Sophia the raciest lines. They did this because her character had a stroke earlier in life, which made her unable to control the things she was able to say, which caused major laughter throughout the years, because you never think that an old lady would call someone a "slut" but they do without regrets.
Laughter Through Death-
As heartbreaking as it is, the show truly made us laugh during an episode where it talked about death, (The show made us laugh when Frieda Claxton just "Dropped dead" during a jury hearing, because reasons.. And of course many shows from the 80s joked about death and even showed them talking squat about the dead person in question.) Or how Blanche's story about how her husband George died.. (Totally dead mam crunch crunch.. sorry had to..) And when Rose was talking about death you couldn't help but laugh..
Laughter Through the Viewers-
Of course like all shows, they gain popularity over their run and years after the show ends, they may lose some. Golden Girls has that and it will have that for a long time, its there for enjoyment and it helps some people to relax and fall asleep to. And adding to this as well is that, no matter when the show ended that the shows viewers just laugh and laugh, which is good. I remember one time I was at the doctors and someone was laughing their head off I asked them what they were watching, they said golden girls, because their child was getting their leg cast off. So you can see how important it is for those who need it.
Laughter Through Love-
The show dealt with love like mostly any other show, like Blanche finding guys and Dorothy failing at love, and Rose dating after many years of her husband Charlie passing away, Sophia being Sophia and still dating even at EIGHTY. remember that old folks still have that drive to fall in love and it can be a wonderful time as well! The showed the dates (even the bad ones) could be seen as amusing and funny, cause you never know how good you have it until you laugh at a fail date on tv.
The Show just had a wonderful cast, and the fact it was a permanent cast of 4 people for all 7 years, not many shows can say they did that, the cast clinked together and worked well. Why did the Golden Girls have this legacy, because they worked hard on the show and never gave up, they had serious moments, in which their comedy was in there, it was always subtle, always there. No matter what show you watch now, the Golden Girls will always be there.
In the end, the Golden Girls was a show built on humour, comedy, love, loss and things that make a good comedy show great. A show with a long lasting legacy and a show with 4 main actresses who could gel together from the start and to the finish. In a decade of shows that were popular in the US and across the globe, the Golden Girls went all over the world and inspired many shows to learn from Golden Girls and show them how good they could be and how much we could learn from them. Even today when you watch the show you see the humour and you see that the writers and producers were ahead of their time.
