"What can you say about 7 years of fights and laughter...secrets...cheesecake..."
A lot. You can say a lot about 7 years of the Golden Girls, the laughter, the episodes, watching the ladies consume cheesecake while talking about life problems. there is a lot to say about everything and I have written about it, because I believe no matter how much you love the show (Or any show for that matter), there are still words that you haven't expressed nor thought about.
7 years of great comebacks, advise, "Shut Up Rose.." "Shady Pines" "Picture it..". 7 Years of Rose trailing off in a St Olaf story that could be a movie if it wanted to be, 7 Years of Blanche's sexcapades, 7 Years of Dorothy slamming the door in Stan's face, 7 years of fantastic writing. A wonderful 7 years.
"Grandma doesn't just fade from existence when she passes a certain age. She's still living and having fun!"- Betty White on the Golden Girls in her Intimate Portrait.
What the show taught me-
There comes a point when we see and even say to ourselves. "what can a show really teach me.", a show can teach you a lot. like love, compassion, kindness and dealing with loss. But what did a show in 1985-1992 teach me? I can say it taught me a lot. and I am going to explain why and I hope to hit a nail on the head. I may have written about this before, but I think I need to write it again.
The Golden Girls was of course a comedy show, but in true Golden Girls style dealt with highly sensitive issues, with humour, and didn't push a nerve or be insensitive.
The show taught us to find humour, compassion, love and how to deal with death with comedy and humour, to find ourselves as one of the characters and remember how good it was to see how much we are like them..
The 2010s-
So.. the 2010s hey? The Walking Dead, Archer, South Park, The Simpsons, Grey's Anatomy, House, The Sopranos, etc. All have a legacy, but do they have the legacy of the Golden Girls? No, no they don't. What makes Golden Girls special now? 27 years after the show ended its important to say, with YouTube now and twitter and a lot of other streaming sites, that Golden Girls videos are very popular.
The Award Wins-
I can never not mention how many awards this show won. It won a lot, it had critical acclaim and was nominated for awards in all 7 seasons, but the girls won their awards in 1986 (Betty), 1987 (Rue) and 1988 (Bea and Estelle). It was a reward for the hard work they did, a true reward, because the writers (including creators Susan Harris, Thomas and Witt also got an Emmy award as well.)
The show received 121 nominations with 36 wins, 11 of those were emmy awards, 4 were golden globes.
The Losses-
While we feel like family during a shows run when those 3 years in 2008-2010 hit, it felt like a truck hit fans the hardest because we felt like that family. But It would've been hard for Betty to comprehend as well. Not only lose one co-star but 3 in 3 years, that's why its called "The Golden Girls curse", but Betty broke that curse and now is 96. Its hard for anyone to comprehend how they sat in the order they passed in. (If you watch the episode where Rose says "What happens when theres only one of us left..") and truly the one left behind makes the world proud.
How It Ended-
The show ended with a wedding, and a last hug goodbye, everything felt wrapped up, Dorothy finally getting the happiness of finally settling down (and seeing that Stan wanted to take her to her wedding in style. He admits he wished things would've been different and that he never stopped loving her.). I said before I'd rather this ending then most endings nowadays. 7 years of love, trust, cheesecake, came down to one of the most emotional scenes, Dorothy say her final goodbye. "You'll always be my sisters. Always." and that's how it ended. You see her leave one final time out that door, leave the house that she spent 7 years in.. As hard as it is to say, she'd never step foot into it again.
The Ever lasting legacy-
After the show debuted and ended the show's legacy has stayed with the show til this very day 26 years on. Reruns, merch and twitter accounts (Ah you know the quote pages, fans finding the show), the legacy of the show is much better than many other shows, because of how well the cast gelled from the start, how it made the community of viewers feel and how even now in 2018 the relevancy of topics that were on the show.. (Including the Donald Trump meme..) The show when it debuted beat out the Cosby Show in ratings, moved Designing Women to Monday nights, tied with 3 shows during its run and even spent 6 of 7 seasons in the Top 10, now that's a legacy.
In the end, the Golden Girls was a show built on humour, comedy, love, loss and things that make a good comedy show great. A show with a long lasting legacy and a show with 4 main actresses who could gel together from the start and to the finish.
Golden Girls forever.
