Now for the best part of 7 seasons, Stan was the meme of the show (You know after Rose's stories about St Olaf and Blanche being Blanche and going off about Atlanta), always having the door slammed in his face, made fun of because of his toupee and the fact that Dorothy would tell the girls about his sexual misadventures and in general rather embarrassing stories. I won't be the first one to admit, but I never liked Stan as a character in general, but he proved in the end that he made a mistake in leaving Dorothy and in the end you can see that..
Let me just say this.. If you have watched the final episode of the show (and no doubt you have) you see Stan decides to drive Dorothy to her wedding, annoyed he didn't get an invite he decided himself he'd do the one thing he knew he could, drive her to the church. Stan reveals in the conversation that he still loved her, and that the way things ended between them was wrong and that he made up his mind, but it was too late. (at this point in time, Stan made his own bed and he had to lay in it.)
When you see the wedding take place, Stan comes in late and sits down next to someone else, and in that moment you see that he has let go of the past, and wishes for her to be happy because he ruined his chance of a happy life with Dorothy.
On the other hand, Stan probably knew deep down that he cared for Dorothy. And over the course of some of those episodes he was in you could tell. The episode where Sophia comes down with pneumonia and he looks after her in the waiting room while waiting for news, that showed the other side to Stan that he was caring and very worried about her, other episodes he couldn't give two hoots about Dorothy or anyone else.. Probably why he's a pothead..
The character of Stan to me, is a bit overplayed by now, but back then knowing what type of character you were going to be in a sitcom is like wondering what type of script you would get, Stan is shown as manipulative, egotistical, caring, business savvy etc.
Stan's first episode, season 1 ep 2, we get the backstory on what happened between the two, how they ended up divorced, running off with an airline stewardess, and in the finale regretting his decision, it came a little too late Stan.
