Rue was known for her characters on "Maude" as Vivian Cavender Harmon and "Golden Girls" as Blanche Devereux and for many TV movies, and Broadway work.
My respect for Rue goes a long way as well. Because in her lifetime she was married and divorced 5 times, had many health issues, but always had the work ethic and worked very hard to support herself and her son, no doubt, she gave all, she was very underrated and always gave her all.
Her first TV show character appearance "Love of Life" and her last one was "Meet The Browns". in-between all of those shows, was Broadway work and a book release, Rue's first break came on Broadway (for which the show it was escapes me), but her TV break was in 1972 in the two part episode of Maude the WELL known season 1 episodes, known as "Maude's Dilemma", she continued on the show for 101 episodes, after Maude ended, Rue was in several shows as a one time character and even before golden girls started was apart of the show "Mama's Family".
But I want to discuss Maude briefly. Rue played the character of Vivian Harmon (Nee Cavender) the wife of Arthur Harmon. Rue played this character for 6 years beside later co-star on the Golden Girls Bea Arthur, Conrad Bain, Bill Macy and Adrienne Barbeau.
Rue made her character highly amusing. Rue did a wonderful job in the series and made sure her character was played right. But everyone knows Maude was all about Bea. But a take away from the series is how funny Rue could really be, given the chance, given the episode and given the script. I still watch a few episodes of Maude and chuckle because its so good and very underrated.
Over 7 years later she was scripted to play Rose on the Golden Girls, only for a last minute change for her to swap Rose for Blanche with Betty White taking over the Rose role and Blanche launched her career into more stardom with the sexualised character of Blanche.
And when the 1987 Emmy Awards came around, and Rue won for "Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series", she gave a very gracious acceptance speech, she thanked everyone who she worked with, her family and her son. My favourite thing she said was "Every kick is a boost" and also thanked Norman Lear (Like Bea did a year later).
Rue in her time won. 1 Emmy, A Golden Comedy Apple (Shared with the girls), OFTA award, and two TV land awards (again shared with the girls).
But so what? Why do I have that respect? Because I do. Because I remember watching a video of some news reporter asking Betty White how she felt at Rue's passing. "Ruesy.. Rue McClanahan was special" and she was, she was underrated in all her roles. She was special for the reason she wanted to have that work ethic to be in Hollywood and work in Hollywood for a long time.
"Compassion is the foundation of everything positive, everything good. If you carry the power of compassion to the marketplace and the dinner table, you can make your life really count."- Rue McClanahan
"People always ask me if I'm like Blanche. And I say, "Well, Blanche was an oversexed, self-involved, man-crazy, vain Southern belle from Atlanta -- and I'm not from Atlanta!""- Rue McClanahan
"No, no, no please. I cannot bear that again. She was listening to her car radio, Big Band, not all talk. There was a contest. Something about a little voice, a lucky number and a dime in a door handle, then Bim Bam Boosh, won the tickets."-Blanche Devereux
"Dorothy...You don't have to say anything.."- Blanche Devereux
Rue is an underrated Legend. And always will be. Love you Rue.
