What happens when there's only one of us left?, Don't worry I can look after myself.
Never has a quote brought such emotion. Never has a quote felt so powerful.
But why is this episode so important? I have written about this episode before, but I have not dissected it.
Here is a snippet of the previous post I made called "What Made Golden Girls Special To Me":
"The first one was "Sophia's Choice"- The episode in itself was a comfort, because I had a grandma who was in a nursing home, a bad one. I remember watching the episode and crying as Rose said "What happens when there's only one of us left." and Sophia's reply being "I can take care of myself.", it was a line that my grandmother would say, to me often "You look after yourself, and you take care of you." we took her out of the home a few days a week, she had no idea who I was but she called me her "Bearded Son" or "Beardo" because of my beard. When she passed away and the funeral service was over I felt empty, but knowing her soul was with me I went home. When I got home I started to watch that episode, the episode was full of its trademark humour, but it's what I needed. Its a special episode because she was no longer in pain and she was the "only" one left of her friends, she took care of herself.

On with the dissection..
The episode starts like any other with Blanche wanting a Breast job, you know because Blanche, most the episode consists of Blanche wanting her boobs done.
The Sophia comes in and said she tried to visit her friend at Shady Pines named Lillian, Blanche telling her that she got a call saying she was moved to "Sunny Pastures", with Dorothy saying it isn't so bad that she got moved there. But Sophia remarks that Sunny Pastures is the place they take old people when they can no longer afford a place like Shady Pines.
The other part of the episode is them looking after Lillian and helping her out, which it appears that she may have dementia, she is slowly getting worse.
The other part that makes the episode more emotional is that when Sophia and Dorothy go to Sunny Pastures and go to put in a complaint saying that they are not doing enough in looking after all the elderly people who go there, in which the man running the place says that he agrees with what they are saying, he says that they are doing everything possible to give them the best of care but their social security and medicare are only just providing for them as the government is making cutbacks and they are operating in the red.
Rose spends the day going around the city and finding a place for Lillian to live, she eventually finds one, but the problem is that none of the girls can afford it with Dorothy being Dorothy and saying none of them can afford it, but in a moment of kindness from Blanche she gives up her dream of owning a new pair of bosoms she decides that helping out Lillian is better, which gives Lillian two years of possible care from the new retirement home.
And if this episode wasn't emotional enough, Blanche brings up a good point, that they are nearing the elderly status, and that no matter what they would always remain together even if they end up in a nursing home.
The quote at the end said by Rose "What happens when there's one of us left?" Sophia replies "Don't worry, I can look after myself."- why does it make that so sad? Because Estelle was the first Golden Girl to pass away.. And the last remaining Golden Girl, Betty White is still going strong.
This episode was important in the series as Blanche puts her dream of bosoms aside, and shows her better side. This episode is also pure golden girls, well written and directed.
