in 1985 a show premiered, a show that changed the lives of all 4 ladies that worked on the show, you know them pretty much by now a show that has stood the test of time and a show that won 4 an Emmy Award for its 4 main actors (feat not many shows have done, in fact only 3 shows have done this).. I'm pretty sure you all know the story by now.
So what else was around in 1985? Shows like Cheers, The Cosby Show, 227, Dallas, Family Ties, Newhart, Murder,She Wrote (season 2), The Jeffersons, Australian TV show Neighbours debuted, and many, many more shows were around, and the funny thing about some of these shows is that they were almost cancelled due to low numbers during the pilot season..
The Ladies-
As everyone knows by now, the golden girls were portrayed by Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, Betty White and Rue McClanahan. Bea and Rue worked together on the show Maude for 6 seasons. Betty was known for password and her husband Allen Ludden. Estelle was in theatre on the run of "Torch Song Trilogy", and if you look up on it, if Bea had passed on the role it would have been given to Elaine Strich or Doris Roberts, but Rue coxed her into the role and that was all she wrote. Bea Arthur's comedy legacy on the show was clearly seen by the way she held the take and by the way she would deliver a line. Betty was excellent, Rue was brilliant and Estelle was a trooper.
The Award Wins-
I can never not mention how many awards this show won. It won a lot, it had critical acclaim and was nominated for awards in all 7 seasons, but the girls won their awards in 1986 (Betty), 1987 (Rue) and 1988 (Bea and Estelle). It was a reward for the hard work they did, a true reward, because the writers (including creators Susan Harris, Junger and Witt also got an Emmy award as well.)
Reacting Too the shows debut season + It's lifespan
The Pilot episode aired and people loved it. The episode started with Dorothy walking into the kitchen after a day working as a substitute teacher, with the quote "3 girls had shaved heads, and 2 boys had green hair." Coco replying "They were expressing themselves.." Dorothy with the savage comeback (comebacks that she was known for in later episodes.) "I expressed myself. I told them to leave they were to ugly to look at.", then Rose coming and an complaining about her job, and Blanche coming in and asking if she can borrow Dorothy's mink stole. Later in the episode Sophia comes in a taxi claiming "The Home burnt down" and owing a "$67 tab" for the taxi ride over. "67 dollars? Ma the home is 15 minutes from here"... Well duh? But what got me was the amazing comeback from Sophia when she says "Who are you?" to Blanche and she replies "It's me Blanche.." "You look like a prostitute.", and of course Blanche being Blanche is going to marry a man, but in true Golden Girls style the guy turns out to be a crook and at the end of the episode, it shows what the show truly does to you. There is a conversation between Rose, Dorothy and Blanche, saying that even if they get married, that they would remain "family" and friends.- And darn right they did.
But how does the world react now?- I think the same, because the show is timeless, the shows humour, jokes, and the way it dealt with serious issues, especially in the 21st century, and in the world now, I think it is a great way to escape, though the Golden Girls to popular now, very popular it still feels like they are in our living room. And I have said this multiple times as well, no matter what year it is Golden Girls had a way of doing things not many other shows did. How many shows did you know back in 1985 that had dealt with coming out a gay or assisted suicide? (Even though nothing comes of the suicide in itself and that Sophia tells her friend to live in the now and that she is not alone, episode it still makes people talk.) Not many shows on network TV would/could do that, because they were all a cast of young people, but like all shows I do believe that the show crossed the line sometimes, like how the girls made fun of Blanche's daughter for her weight... I wont name anymore because if I do I will go off on a tangent. - I can say that in the 2010s, people love the show more than ever.
What about the finale? Its an emotional hit that is for sure. but for the 27.1 million people who watched it, while I cant speak for them, would say it was the best way to end the series, and again I've discussed this. That shows need to end better like Golden Girls, a last hug goodbye, and how the characters felt knowing that they wouldn't see their friend again, until the spin off Golden Palace. Even if the Palace didn't take off, it was a good take on how Rose became the strong one and how Blanche grew as a character.
Reacting to the losses-
It is never easy hearing the loss of a TV/Singer/writer/director is never easy, and its never easy knowing that The Golden Girls cast was in the news in 2008, 09 and 10 being the years that we lost the girls talent. But its what made Rue and Betty make sure they talked over the phone on a regular basis until Rue's death in 2010. That period of three years was known as "The Golden Girls Curse", it was just a tragic set of circumstances. Betty White has broken the curse and is 96, she is making everyone proud.
Estelle's Death-
Back in 2008, when the news came across that Estelle Getty died from advanced lewy body dementia, I was at home watching an episode of the Golden Girls (it was the pilot episode I was watching for the 10th time), and in fact it came across as breaking news. As I live in Australia, Entertainment Tonight is one media service we get regularly, and that's when it came up and of course the thought is always there for both the people involved in the show and for the people who watched it. My heart broke for her and her family, as well as the girls. They worked together for 7 years (8 if you count Golden Palace), so of course it was emotional for everyone involved.
Bea's Death-
Bea gave so much to the industry and she gave so much to everything she was in. She was a warrior, she always looked in good health, but when again ET broke that news that Bea died of cancer (And the fact that she was complex and didn't even tell her colleagues, until a week before her death) I couldn't believe it, she was well known for her roles as Maude Findlay and Dorothy Zbornak, two great characters from a different generation, a generation for change, she said it herself she was a "bubble pricker".
Rue's Death-
Rue's death was a death no one saw coming and for every reason, she deserved happiness and she deserved a lot more in her life. her Golden Girls run made it great for her as she was committed and she took every role she got and played you could see she was there for her character and her role. Blanche was Rue's second blast off role, she was Vivian on Maude for 6 seasons..
In short about the losses, the world very much reacted differently. Some of the world didn't even know Rue had died for about 6 months. But the world was heartbroken. Betty was heartbroken, and we mourned with her, we mourned the losses and we celebrated their lives. Their legacies and the enjoyment they gave everyone during their life.
The World Reacts-
Of course like all shows, they gain popularity over their run and years after the show ends, they may lose . Golden Girls has that and it will have that for a long time, its there for enjoyment and it helps some people to relax and fall asleep to.
