This week, I returned to the "Nest" with Dinah Manoff! Dinah had some great things to say about playing Carol, and also told me about her own run-in with the gum-hating Bea Arthur! Check it out here. Matt

Enjoying reading these interviews, Matt. The main theme that's coming across in them is that Bea was rather....uptight, for a better word. Disappointing to hear that something so trivial could wind her up that much, although not altogether surprising given the stories we have had rumours of over the years. Though admittedly I've always been a fan of her GG character more than anything else.

Thanks, Sam! What's funny is that I wasn't even expecting to unearth all this TGG (and Bea) trivia! The story about Bea's gum phobia came up naturally when I was chatting with Park Overall, so then Dinah read that and chimed in with her own Bea gum story, now David Leisure read those and added to it, too!
The Bea/Betty stuff they're talking about wasn't news to me, but the chewing gum thing was! And if you've read David Leisure's, he talks about Estelle needing cue cards, which Rue talked about in her autobio, too.

Haha yes, at first I thought there was going to be some kind of joke in Park's story about the way Bea took hold of her arm in the parking lot to ask her about Kristy chewing gum - and it really shocked me that she behaved in that way. I knew about the Betty hatred but even the revelation in David's interview shocked me a little too, about how Bea had to be restrained from going to confront her following the line mess-up.
I'm not quite all the way through David's interview but I am loving it - he sounds like such a character!

I love all these interviews ! Even those the things about Bea is true, she is still my favourite ! I suppose in life you don't get along with everyone in life- I don't like all of my co workers haha I suppose she was just had her particular things that got on her neves it doesn't mean she was a bad person she just liked things to be a certain way, it even said in the interview apart from that she was fun to hang out with !

I suppose she was just had her particular things that got on her neves it doesn't mean she was a bad person she just liked things to be a certain way, it even said in the interview apart from that she was fun to hang out with ! Totally. It can be tough to appropriately express someone's tone in an interview, but none of them were truly speaking negatively about Bea in telling those stories. Their respect for her was evident in the conversations. But they did latch onto the gum thing as a fun little Bea story! FYI everyone, I've slowed down in finding interview subjects recently, but I do have some feelers out that I hope come through soon! Matt

Don't know how, but I didn't get to these interviews until now. Great stuff and a lot of fun, though I had to skip some spoiler-y parts.
Sad to hear about Bea's behaviour towards Betty during that line mess-up when she was just lightening up the mood. Hadn't heard the "whore" part before, wonder if that's true.
