Thank you for being a friend, your heart is true, you're a pal and confidant.
Many times have I stated the "7 Seasons, 177 episodes" stuff in my forum posts. Why? Because its true what they say, no matter how long you do a show with your closest friends, you remain friends forever. Some shows may end in a blaze of glory and the actors/actresses never see each other again. The Golden Girls were no different, but the one thing you saw when they were out as a group, is how well they looked together, Bea, Betty, Rue and Estelle. Whether it was claiming awards or just out a party they were together.
7 years of great comebacks, advise, "Shut Up Rose.." "Shady Pines" "Picture it..". 7 Years of Rose trailing off in a St Olaf story that could be a movie if it wanted to be, 7 Years of Blanche's sexcapades, 7 Years of Dorothy slamming the door in Stan's face, 7 years of fantastic writing. A wonderful 7 years.
But I am going to say it again. 7 years. 7 glorious years, they shared together on screen. Betty filmed a season 1 episode known as "The Heart Attack" and according to a source on-set, she took emotion from the loss of her late husband Allen Ludden and put it into her performance for that episode, I for one can see her emotion when she is discussing how her on-screen husband died, nothing is more sadder then that. They were all a caring group of people, and I wont hear you say different. Those 7 years on the set, behind the scenes (According to IMDb) that Betty and Rue would play word games on set, Rue would be found sleeping in random places, and they wouldn't go back to dressing rooms, they'd wait off-side the camera just to talk to each other, now how many other shows BTS' can you say did that? Of course there was the whole "Bea didn't like Betty, what made Bea hate Betty" thing going around, rumours from that said it was from Betty winning the Golden Globe first, thus wanting Bea to only have a work relationship (That work relationship bit was confirmed by Bea's son..). It never took away from how good the show was.
The Golden Girls was of course a comedy show, but in true Golden Girls style dealt with highly sensitive issues, with humour, and didn't push a nerve or be insensitive. But there are a few inconsistencies with continuity. Like any show, but Golden Girls did this best, like how Dorothy is in her mid-50s and says her son Michael is 22. How Rose said in one episode she got Mono and never finished High School... but that doesn't bother me,, because its supposed to be humorous, that was Golden Girls.
Speaking of success, the show won 4 Golden Globes for each lady. had 88 nominations with another 34 wins, but the 80s were a magical time for TV, and for 6 of its 7 seasons, the show was in the top 10 of American TV, for 6 years, that in itself is an achievement not many shows can do that. Estelle, Rue and Betty were happy with the ratings of the show, and they were proud of it as well. (Rue said this during one of the girls intimate portraits), but Bea Arthur was tired, and even Rue didn't think Bea wanted to do more, but the show pushed on for two more seasons (even though it was supposed to end in season 5, it would've been a great finale had they left the show during the 89 run.), even success of a hit show can wear you down at the end.
When the show ended in 92, you think "Is that the end of it? Will the show actually have a legacy or will it fade out? Like because the Simpsons started declining, will the Golden Girls? Never will the golden girls decline, not in this lifetime or the next.."- oh yes it did. This very day the legacy of the show is still massive. I've said many times before, there is always a #GoldenGirls fan account tweeting out quotes, Golden Girls podcasts, even Golden Girls characters having twitter handles (WOO, get with the times yo!). The show has a legacy, Rue, Bea, Estelle and Betty can be proud of.. As Betty celebrated her 96th birthday last week, she's doing the girls proud.
The show ended with a wedding, and a last hug goodbye, everything felt wrapped up, Dorothy finally getting the happiness of finally settling down. I said before I'd rather this ending then most endings nowadays. 7 years of love, trust, cheesecake, came down to one of the most emotional scenes, Dorothy say her final goodbye. "You'll always be my sisters. Always."
The Golden Girls, isn't just "Another show" this show did things other shows dare not touch. Assuming because the show had 4 older leads, and they touched on subjects in the 80s that were still taboo, (how Maude touched on taboo subjects from the 70s.. did you know as well that one of the execs didn't want Bea in the Golden Girls, due to the Maude episode, and how fans would react..) seems like some of them left Maude in the 70s because Bea Arthur took off even further when Golden Girls went to the screens, but could you imagine if Dorothy was played by Doris Roberts or Elaine Strich? yeah me either..
To end this entry, the Golden Girls are still Golden too this day, even with the loss of amazing talent through the years, it is never forgotten. Remember stay golden, because the golden girls will be around forever.
