"What can you say about 7 years of fights and laughter...secrets...cheesecake..."- Rose
Well what can you say? It's already been said over the years.
After 177 episodes it all came down to One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest. It all came down to a wedding and an emotional final goodbye. Little side note, when Dorothy left the 2nd and final time, the girls look around for her to come back as genuine, the emotions (them hugging each other) was real.
At the start of the series, if you were to tell me Dorothy would get re-married, I would've said no, flat out no. not because of her sassy comebacks or her smart wit, but because of how brash and unapologetic she was, and we saw the way she treated Stan, slamming doors in his face, yelling at him and basically saying their marriage was a shambles, and them basically not getting along at all. but there were moments between the two of them, where we all thought they'd get back together. Hell they even thought about remarrying!
After watching the Finale at least 30 times, I can say it is one episode that hits you like a rock and there are many Golden Girls episodes that hit you with the messy reality, including the episode Mrs George Devereaux and Old Friends, but the Finale is up there with emotion, on what it would be like to leave the people you've grown so close to over 7 years.
After Bea Arthur claimed that this would be her final season on the show, saying she was done that she wanted to do her own thing, the writers probably knew not to mess around with Dorothy in the final episode.
The episode starts off with Blanche preparing for a date but realising that her uncle is coming to town and that she wants to go on the date. Blanche asks Dorothy to go instead with Dorothy replying "I'm to smart for this.." with Rose calling Lucas "Pathetic and lonely" and saying that he would be good for her, but she agrees to go anyway. While on their date, they have dinner at a crab restaurant (get it because later there's a sex joke about crabs) and they discuss the fact that Blanche lied to them, they then concoct a plan to get back at her, and they toast to a plan of "revenge"
As Dorothy returns home from her date with Lucas, she claims that even if she never sees him again she'll always have "Don's Crab House.", with Sophia saying "Ingrid Threadman had Paris, my pussycat has Crabs.", and this leads to Lucas coming to the house and saying "They only just met' but he would like to "get married" causing Blanche to react the only way Blanche could, by overreacting and then fainting, and then saying their "$2 romance is tearing apart the family."
Over the course of the next 10 minute timeframe, that Lucas really falls in love with Dorothy and that after Blanche toasts their relationship. With Lucas saying "Will you marry me for real?" "For real?" "For real.." "Oh yes!" that type of jazz. Not surprising Blanche looks on confused as heck.
The next part always got me, as it was Rose was saying that she planned to move in with her daughter, and that she wanted Blanche to move on with her life and find someone, Blanche saying that she belongs in Miami with Blanche, with Sophia agreeing (even if at the time Sophia was leaving with Dorothy..), the girls hugging.
Then the wedding scene, starts off with Dorothy in a limo to which we see the infamous "Toilet Dress", as she was being taking to the wedding. She asks the driver to stop. The driver stops and it is revealed to be Stanley. Dorothy has one final go at Stan, before he says that all he wanted was to be invited to the wedding and that he was the man who gave his name. Stan said that he cared for her enough to drive her to church in "Style" and that the final hair on his forehead haunted him, Dorothy then ripped it out.
We then see her walking down the aisle with Sophia by her side and we hear all their thoughts, with Rose thinking about "The Farmer in the den." and Sophia thinking it was "Such a long walk, and I've blown out my hamstring." and if you look in the background that Stan got into the church and sat down to watch the woman he let go finally be happy. Blanche smiling and her thoughts were good thoughts saying "She's never seen her so happy. except that one time." as the wedding continues with the Priest marrying the two, with Stan deciding not to say anything and see his former wife get married.
After the wedding Dorothy is packing, and Sophia comes in, the two have a discussion and Sophia said she is staying in Miami and she didn't want to leave the girls behind, and that Dorothy should "go" and "Be married now" and "I was in the way before." to which Dorothy agrees, and says that she gave her the confidence to leave the nest and to go to Atlanta to which Sophia agrees putting away a box at the same time. It is a great scene between mother and daughter.
The Final scene.. the goodbye scene. Sees the girls hug and the final words of "You'll always be my sisters.. Always" Dorothy leaving and the girls embracing emotional. The credits then roll, the series over..
Now I will say this, it was a great scene. Not for the fact it was the final episode and it would be the last time they were on that set (until episode one of Golden Palace), it was the last episode and the last time they'd all be together.
We shared 7 years of laughter, and cheesecake with the girls and we followed the emotional storylines, the funny storylines, we followed the breakups, the cheesecake scenes, the insults, Blanche's escapades, Rose's stories and Sophia's picture it. For 177 episodes we felt like we were there with the girls. No doubt we did. The Golden Girls to this day holds a special place in my hearts across the globe, because it was a show that progressed in storylines and made sure that they did many things considered "taboo" that they used signature comedy they were known for. The Golden Girls will always be special.
