One show won all the awards, the other has "The Terminator" and an emmy for hairstyling. But what is stopping me from comparing these two shows? that's right, I am NOT going to compare Golden Girls and Designing Women anymore. First off, yes the two shows did have 4 female cast members, who were living in different cities in their younger/older years. Yes they did compete in ratings and yes they had two brilliant creators behind the shows, but why have I stopped comparing the two shows? Easy because they are two different shows, with a strong cast, and strong storylines..
"But it's a discount Golden Girls... OMG"- no, no its not. Designing Women was more then just a Golden Girls with women from the south.
Another reason as well, is that you didn't see most of the storylines on a comedy such as cancer, AIDS, menopause, loss, babies, marriage, job problems, without watching a show in the 80s/90s, that's when shows started hitting their peaks, because they knew to keep people watching, that they would have to take some real world problems and put them on a tv series.
First of all, its not worth the energy anymore, because of course watching a show from any year can be like choosing your twitter handle. Its hard to compare these shows, on acting ability alone, "What about the writing" I hear you ask.. Well Designing Women's scripts were written on legal pads BY creator Linda Bloodworth and Golden Girls creator Susan Harris wrote a couple before just watching on.. But writing just doesn't cut it, does it? The location of the series, DW set in Atlanta, GG's set in Miami.. there the comparisons end.
I remember someone tweeting about Designing Women and I saw a reply saying "The political humour was to much for me.." but for me? I'm Australian and I have to laugh at it, because, if you don't understand the jokes about former US presidents it makes me laugh. The "Ronald Reagan Neck" joke, yeah I didn't get that the first time, but it made me laugh. And that's what a comedy series should do, make you laugh and cry, and think. And now seeing it on my twitter feed #DesigningWomen and rts of the girls, that makes me happy, people are still remembering, 30 years on.
Golden Girls on the other hand has been the more popular show, but the funny thing is after all, Golden Girls through a ton of shade at Designing Women, and unfairly, though it was the same type of show strong women doing what they can, I believe all the shows the golden girls made fun of (even now) you have to google that show and watch a few episodes. The shade thrown at other shows and even people I can say was a little unfair, especially how sometimes it was thrown at Bea Arthur. But you see it on twitter as well, the tweets the love.. I even saw a twitter page that was all star wars content give up and start tweeting golden girls, wowee. People still remember golden girls to, that also makes me smile.
"But, why do you like both series, you are only supposed to like one..."- again I hear you ask.. That's like asking me which Legal Drama do I prefer Law and Order or Criminal Minds. I watch all of them, I watch legal dramas, documentaries on murderers, sad shows, happy shows, desperate housewives, medical shows, I will watch it all, and that means you can watch both Golden Girls and Designing Women and actually see that, while the Sugarbakers design firm doesn't eat cheesecake they can still quick quip each other, hey the golden girls basically made fun of each other as well for 7 years, so there's that as well.
I also have Rue as my #GoldenGirl and Julia as my #DesigningWoman, because they were my favourite characters, we all have a little bit of Julia in us, a little bit of Blanche, a little of Charlene, a little of Suzanne, a bit of Rose, a bit of Dorothy and a bit of Mary Jo, why? Because we care about both of these shows no matter how much we try to deny it.
But now as I have watched both shows, with intent and enjoyment, I believe its time you stop comparing the shows, because you can watch as many shows as you like but nothing pulls you back in like some Designing Women or some Golden Girls.
