I have season 2 of The Golden Girls on DVD that someone gave me years ago and recently I decided that I wanted to own the whole series, so I got the DVD bundle from abc studios that has them all. When I put one of the DVDs in, I noticed that the quality was horrible, so I compared it to the DVD set I already had. The video quality of my older set is much better. I discovered that the older set uses dual-layered DVDs, while the newer ones are single-layered, which means the video quality is way more compressed. I can’t believe these discs were approved to be released this way.
I returned the abc studios DVD set and decided to buy the older releases. It’s pretty easy to tell the difference between the two versions if you can see actual pictures of the product. The abc versions come in plastic cases and on the back it says Buena Vista Home Entertainment and abc studios. It also lists the release year as 2016. The older DVDs come in cardboard Digibook cases and on the back it says Touchstone Pictures and Buena Vista Home Entertainment. The year listed is between 2004-2007, depending on which season it is.
Anyway, I found some of these older Digibook releases on eBay and bought the rest of the series. When I popped in season 1, I noticed that the quality was bad. I was confused because I thought these older releases were supposed to be better quality. I compared the packaging of this season 1 DVD set to my season 2 DVD set I already had, and I noticed that on the back of the one I already had it said “for sale in the USA only” while the one I just bought said “for sale in Canada only.” I looked at the packaging for the other seasons I had just bought and saw that season 2 also said “for sale in Canada only” while all the others said “for sale in the USA and Canada only.” I also looked at the DVD specifications of the season 1 release and saw that it was single-layered, as opposed to my “USA only” season 2 set that has dual-layered discs. I didn’t open up the DVDs that said “USA and Canada only” because I just decided to return the set and try to track down the ones that say “USA only.”
So far, I’ve purchased the older releases of seasons 1-3 on eBay and they say “for sale in the USA only.” I tried to find seasons 4-7 but I couldn’t find any that said “USA only.” They all said “USA and Canada only.” I’m not sure if the ones that say “USA and Canada only” have the same video quality as the “USA only” ones or if they’re compressed like the “Canada only” and 2016 abc studios DVDs. The season 3 set that came with the Canadian releases said “USA and Canada only” but I was able to find a season 3 set that said “USA only. However, I’m not sure if any of the older releases for seasons 4-7 say “USA only” or if they all say “USA and Canada only.”
Does anyone here have all the original DVD releases that came in cardboard packaging? Do any of the sets of season 4-7 say “USA only” or do they all say “USA and Canada only.” If they say “USA and Canada only” could someone check whether the discs are single-layered or dual-layered? I know this a long post, but I haven’t been able to find any definitive information about this online and I want to be sure I get the highest quality DVDs that were released. Basically, all I want to know is if any releases of seasons 4-7 said "USA only" or if they all said "USA and Canada only." And I'd like to know if the DVDs that come in the "USA and Canada only" releases are single-layered or dual-layered. Thanks!
